Quality testing: Nutriswiss tests oil in BINDER vacuum drying chamber

Switzerland is home to three refineries for cooking oils, one of which is run by Nutriswiss in the town of Lyss. The company is a leading manufacturer of edible fats and oils, whose customers include some of the largest food producers in Switzerland and the world. Dr, Mario Lehmann is the company’s lab director and he relies on a BINDER vacuum drying chamber for his work in the lab. Anyone visiting Nutriswiss finds themselves confronted with a refinery full of large containers, towers, and countless pipelines that are almost impossible to tell apart. And indeed it would be impossible if it weren’t for the savvy lab director Mario Lehmann. He leads us straight to the lab, which contains a huge number of fat and oil samples – including his own personal favorite unrefined cocoa butter, which smells heavenly and tastes even better.

SAVE MONEY WITH AIR

Inhale, exhale – we fill our lungs with oxygen with around 20,000 breaths of air each day. By comparison, a laboratory “breathes” significantly slower: fume hoods suck air out, and the ventilation draws fresh air back in. While that makes things safe, it also consumes a huge amount of power. Controlled by a clever air management system, however, more energy – and therefore money – can be saved than some might think.

CASE STUDY KLINIKUM RECHTS DER ISAR TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITY MUNICH

A renowned scientific institute in Munich is studying the genetic form of leukemia. When someone is diagnosed with leukemia, they have a blood test carried out straight away. They also undergo a detailed genetic analysis. If, once the patient's DNA code has been established, a particular gene is missing, tests are performed on mice to see whether this defect also causes the mice to develop the disease in five to seven years' time. A defective human gene can also be injected into a mouse. The results provide insights into the origins of the genetic form of leukemia and enable new medication to be developed. The BINDER simulation chambers are vital to the institute's work, as they provide plenty of space for growing cells and offer high quality.

THREE NEW VIDEOS ABOUT THE KÜHNER SB10-X BIOREACTOR

In the last weeks, Kühner released three new videos about the orbital shaken benchtop bioreactor SB10-X with single-use bags. The SB10-X is applicable for any type of cell culture process, including perfusion workflows, with human (also stem cells), mammalian, plant, and insect cells. With the standard vessel module, it has a working volume of 4 to 12 liters. The SB10-X is used in research, process development or as a pilot scale bioreactor. Costumers use the bioreactor for instance in the areas of vaccine and antibody production, gene therapy, stem cell cultivation, and artificial meat production. With the 3L-vessel module of the SB10-X, users can perform cell cultivations in single-use bags in small working volumes ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 Liters. The relatively small working volume allows the execution of very cost-efficient perfusion processes since the consumption of costly cell culture media is kept at a necessary minimum.
